What To Expect During Your Second Trimester - Weeks 20 - 24
Your pregnancy is divided into 3 Trimesters. This page will show you what to expect during your second trimester during weeks 20 - 24.
Your Baby
Your baby will begin to move a lot. You will feel the baby's arms and legs move. There will be active times and quite times.
Skin is protected by a white cheesy secretion (vernix caseosa) as the baby moves in the amniotic fluid. The skin is wrinkled and red and is filling ot with fat.
Eyelids are still closed.
Fingernails are growing.
Your doctor will be able to detect a heartbeat.
Baby will be about 12 in. long and weigh about 1 1/2 lbs.
You will gain about 3/4 lb a week or total of 3 - 4 lbs.
Your breasts grow larger and softer, and the veins start to show. A clear white fluid, called colostrum may leak from your breasts.
You can feel the uterus at the navel or just above it.
Constipation may be a problem until the end of the pregnancy.
Your hair may feel thicker and oilier.

Continue your prenatal checkups.
Eat a balanced diet. Include plenty of milk and milk products. Drink 6 - 8 glasses of water every day.
Avoid smoking, alcohol, drugs, caffeinated drinks and junk food.
Buy well-fitting support bras.
Enroll in a childbirth education class for expectant couples. It will provide you information to prepare you for labor and delivery.
